About Club

Early in the year 1959-60, Rotary Club of Poona felt that there was a scope for sponsoring an additional Club in the North of Pune with the extensive growth of Pune and the rapid development of industries in the North & West of the City. Rtn. Past District Governor Ebrahim D Chinoy was entrusted with the work of studying the possibilities of starting a new Club.

He made a survey of the community in Poona North and finding that the same could sustain a new Rotary Club, submitted a Survey Report to the then District Governor, Rtn Ishwarlal Shastri. Governor Shastri finding the Survey reports quite favourable appointed PDG Ebrahim Chinoy as his special representative to organize the new Club. Rtn PDG Chinoy after visiting the community several times and contacting leading men therein was successful in holding the organizational meeting of the Rotary Club of Poona North on 14th April 1960. In addition to relinquishing the territory, the Rotary Club of Poona permitted two of its senior members to resign from that Club and accept offices in the new Club.

These members were Rtn Charter President S.T Raja and Rtn Charter Treasurer S.L. Kirloskar whose leadership and talent were available in guiding the new Club in the formative years. Provisional Rotary Club of Poona North was informally inaugurated on 14th April 1960, when the elections of the office bearers and the completion of other documentation for application to Rotary International for its membership were finalized.

Rotary Club of Poona North was admitted to Rotary International as its full-fledged member on 7th Nov 1960. The Charter was presented to the Club by the then District Governor Rtn. D. M. Desai on 20th Dec 1960. Our Club Number is 0015538.

Our Club is the second oldest Rotary Club in Pune City. It has 86 members as of now. The members are mainly successful industrialists, businessmen, & professionals. It has constructed Community Centre, Latrines, Tube-wells, and has established a high school in collaboration with a reputed educational institute i.e. Pune-Prabodhini.
